Man's history with the elephant spans approximately 5000 years. As a warrior, friend, draft animal and ceremonial consort - the Elephant is the foundation of Thailand. It is the Thai Buddhist belief that the Elephant is but one step away from being reincarnated as human.
The Elephant, according to Aristotle, is the animal which "passes all others in wit and mind."
In the modern world- the future of the Elephant is the responsibility of us all.
The Prakochaban Foundation- which was established by one man- Laithongrien Meepan- is dedicated to providing a sustainable future for the Elephant- within the Thai culture, and beyond.
Importantly the Foundation is also very much about enhancing the education, welfare and status of the Thai mahouts and their families.
In just 12 years a unique village community has grown- a community of humans and elephants.
During this short time 37 elephant babies have been born, as a result of natural matings- an achievement which will likely never be matched in the zoo world.

Additionally, several dangerous elephants- each with a history of killing humans- have been retrained, to again work confidently with people they can trust. As a result these animals have a much brighter future. Without the efforts of the Foundation- most of these animals would have faced years of neglect or would have been put to death.
A permanent home is also provided for elephants who have retired. Many of these animals are well over 60 years of age- and a few, close to 80! Most of the old girls spent their early years in the tough logging industry- and greatly appreciate the gentle retirement they are guaranteed by their patron.
Intuitively, the words of novelist Romain Gary (Roots of Heaven) resonate. "I defy anyone to look upon elephants without a sense of wonder. Their very enormity...their giant stature, represent a mass of liberty that sets you dreaming. They're yes- the last individuals..."
The Prakochaban Foundation, is unique, progressive, far sighted- and worthy of your support.
